The Wake Up Early app the night before: a commitment to wake up at 5:00 AM tomorrow, with check-in opening in 7 hours 13 minutes

Who is it for?

This is for people who want to wake up early, but find it too damn hard.

Someone smiling in their sleep, tucked under a big mint duvet

It's for people who are full of ambition the night before, but in the morning, the allure of their warm bed is too hard to resist.

A hand karate-chopping an alarm clock showing 5:00 AM, cracking it in two

It's for people who set a 5:00 AM alarm, then turn it off in the middle of the night because they "need more sleep".

If that sounds like you, I have good news.

Those mornings are about to become much, much easier.

What does it do?

A winged credit card flying out of reach of a grasping hand

It motivates you to get out of bed by charging your credit card if you don't get up.

This completely removes the desire to stay in bed. Because if you stay in bed, you will lose money. It's hard to describe how effective this is.

You set the rules, you set the amount. It can be a little, it can be a lot. Whatever sufficiently motivates you.

It stops you from backing out.

Once you've made a commitment to wake up early, we won't let you back out.

The only way to avoid losing your stake is to actually get up when you said you would.

You can't turn it off. You can't change the time. You can't turn off your phone.

Once you commit, you're locked in.

Questions

Is there an iPhone / Android app?

Not yet, however you can visit wakeupearly.com on your phone to access the app. We are working on bringing apps to the iPhone and Android stores.

How much does it cost?

Every new account starts with a 7-day free trial to see if it works for you. After that, membership is US$5 per month, charged automatically to your saved card. You can cancel any time. Stakes are separate and are controlled by you. A stake is only ever charged if you miss a check-in, and every forfeited stake is donated to charity (Doctors Without Borders).

Where does the money go when I miss?

Every forfeited stake is donated to charity (currently Doctors Without Borders). We retain 10% to cover administration and transaction fees, but do not profit from anyone failing a commitment.

How much should I stake?

Enough that it would hurt to lose it. For some, that's $5. For others, it's $500. The average is around $20-30. We suggest you stake the minimum amount that gets you out of bed.

Can I cancel a commitment after creating it?

You get a small window of time after creating a commitment to cancel it. Once that window ends, your commitment locks. Once locked, it can't be cancelled: the only way to keep your stake is to check in on time. You can control how fast a commitment locks in settings.

How do I prove that I'm awake in the morning?

You prove that you're awake by entering a word or code from one of your proof methods (one of the lists of words or codes that you will set up during account creation). This is explained in more detail in how it works.
